Systems Biology

Systems Biology is a field which attempts to go beyond molecular reductionism, and beyond our common reliance on correlations. It is a more holistic approach, but nevertheless largely focused on models of mechanism. I will give a very brief overview of the goals, methods and perspectives of Systems Biology. I will try to highlight both the great promise and the significant challenges ahead for this quantitative, integrative approach to understanding complex biological systems, and to speculate on the ways in which it will gradually aid our understanding and treatment of disease.

James Sharpe is the coordinator of the EMBL-CRG Systems Biology Unit, at the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona. He completed his PhD in London at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research on “Cis-regulatory mechanisms of the Hox genes in mouse development”. His main postdoctoral work was on computational approaches to study mouse limb development. In 2001 Sharpe developed a new type of 3D mesoscoic imaging, which he named “Optical Projection Tomography” (commercialized under the name Bioptonics). This technique has had various applications both in pure biology and pre-clinical disease research. Since July 2006 he has been an ICREA Research Professor and group leader of the Multicellular Systems Biology Group
